End cap questions, answered short
Settle which band your end sits in — in air, splash zone, buried, submerged — before reading down. Seven of these nine answers move with the band. The two about words and tariff codes do not.
Nine questions, in the order they usually arrive
What types of end cap are there, and what is each one for?
Sorted by band, not by catalogue chapter. In air: a push-on PVC shell over a dry cut end, a moulded cap over a crimped terminal, and a live end cap, where each core is capped separately under one thick-wall outer cap. Splash zone: a pole crown and a timber pile top, both closed with an adhesive-lined heat-shrink cap. Buried or flooded: the lined cap on a cut cable end, its relief-valved variant for a hot high-voltage yard, a pulling-eye version for a duct pull, a gland at an enclosure wall, and a mastic-lined cap over an anode-to-lead-wire joint. What do you need before a size code can come back?
Three things, and a part number is not one of them. The outside diameter over whatever is being closed, measured where the mouth of the cap will finish. The length you want covered. And what the end physically is — cable jacket, anode body, pile top, terminal — because the charts are separate documents and a bare diameter matches rows in four of them at once. Every heat-shrink code carries two internal diameters, one as supplied and one after free recovery, and a code is right only when both are. Borderline cases are worked through on the size charts.
Can a cap come off and go back on?
Three parts, three answers. The push-on PVC shell lifts off by hand and goes back, which is why it suits a bore somebody means to open again next week. An adhesive-lined heat-shrink cap does not: the lining wetted the surface beneath it and set there, so opening that end means cutting the cap away and fitting a fresh one. A printed tamper-evident seal is that permanence sold on purpose. Reheating a cap that has already recovered achieves nothing; the memory is spent.
Torch or hot-air gun?
The published method is a torch. Propane or butane, a soft blue flame with a yellow tip, kept moving round the circumference. A pencil-thin flame scorches the polymer, and a scorched cap has failed whether or not it looks closed. Work from the shut end towards the open one, stop when adhesive shows all round the finished edge, and let it cool before anything pulls on it. Recovery wants the wall above 125°C (257°F). No datasheet behind this site publishes an air temperature or a dwell time for hot-air work, so none is printed here. Substrate by substrate: installing a heat-shrink cap.
Our site will not issue a hot-work permit. Does the method change, or the part?
The part. Nothing in this manufacturer's published data is a cold-shrink end cap, so nothing here recovers without heat, and trading a torch for a gun does not satisfy a permit written against hot surfaces as well as open flame. What is left is the unlined route: a push-on PVC cap on an end in air, a moulded PVC cover on a pole or pile crown. Both surrender the adhesive bond, and the IP68 claim goes with it — the trade is set out on end caps where no flame is allowed.
Is it end cap, endcap or end capping? And is a cap the same as a cover or a seal?
End cap, two words, is the object. End capping is the operation: a utility closing four thousand pole crowns over a season is running an end-capping programme, not buying four thousand nouns. Endcap as one word turns up in ordering systems, and it is also the retail term for the display at the end of a shop aisle. Cap, cover and seal are not interchangeable here: seal is used only where that part's datasheet carries an IP68 figure earned by an adhesive or mastic lining. Everything else is a cover, however tightly it grips.
My end sits between two bands. Which one do I take?
The deeper one, and it stops being close once the question is put properly: describe the worst hour of the year, not the average day. A duct dry in April is buried, because it stands full in July. A drum in a yard that floods is in the splash zone though it spends most of its life dry. Over-specifying costs one cap that has to be cut off later. Under-specifying costs the conductor.
What is the HSN or HS code for an end cap?
None is published here, for any part, and that is a decision rather than an oversight. No verified source for one sits in front of us, and classification turns on material and function. A wrong code on an entry is worse for you than a blank field, because the declaration is yours and not ours. Take the line from the supplier's commercial invoice for your own consignment, and have your customs broker confirm it before filing.
Who makes these, do you hold stock, and what do they cost?
Gala Thermo Shrink Pvt. Ltd. of Mumbai manufactures them, at Palghar in Maharashtra and at the Surat SEZ in Gujarat. This site is a reference operated alongside that manufacturer: no stock, no price, no lead time, because there is no source here for any of the three and an invented figure is one somebody quotes back six months later. Who writes this sets out where the line falls.
Asked here often, and genuinely out of scope
These reach this site through the word cap and get nothing useful from it, so they are named rather than quietly answered with the nearest moulding. Pre-insulated pipe sealing caps and pipeline weld-joint caps are a real part from the same manufacturer, written up on a sibling reference: pre-insulated pipe sealing cap. Oil and gas end cap seals, as that phrase is usually searched, means wellhead and tubular sealing. Nothing here fits heat-trace and heat-tape ends, CRT or television anode caps, water-heater anode rod caps, domestic wire connectors, tube-light end caps, motor end-cap insulation or wire-rope end caps. If you arrived from a structural drawing, what you want is a pile cap and pile capping are not the same thing.
