Splash zone, then buried
A pile cap and pile capping are not the same thing
One is at the waterline on a sawn top, fitted years after the pile was driven. The other is below ground under a column, cast before the structure existed. Two depths, two trades, two words apart.
Pile capping: closing a top that has been cut open
Pile capping is done in the splash zone, on a member already driven and already carrying whatever it carries. It is maintenance. A moulded shell or a lined heat-shrink cap goes over the exposed face so that rain, tide and freeze-thaw stop reaching end grain. Nothing structural changes on the day it is fitted, and nothing structural is meant to.
On timber the useful part is what the lining does, not what the shell covers. A hot-melt adhesive flows into the checks and cavities of a sawn top while the shell shrinks down over it, which is why the published claim for that construction is IP68 sealing and a service life beyond 30 years rather than simply a cover. On concrete, steel and composite tops the same shape goes on for two other reasons: a flat crown holds standing water in its surface cracks, and it makes an obvious perch.
The vocabulary travels badly because three trades do versions of this work. A marina says capping the piles. A utility says pole capping and does it at height, at a crown that never sees a tide. A civils contractor hears capping and thinks concrete, because in their world it always is.
Pile cap: the concrete that ties a group of pile heads
A pile cap is buried. It is a reinforced concrete element cast across the heads of a group of piles so the group behaves as one foundation, spreading the load of a single column or wall between them and holding them together under lateral load. Designed before anything is driven, poured once, never retrofitted to a pile in service.
Pile embedment into the pile cap is the detail searched for most, and it is a design decision rather than a product one. The head is broken down, the reinforcement lapped into the cap, and how far the pile itself projects into the underside is fixed by the foundation code the job is drawn to. That figure is not ours to publish, and quoting one out of its code context would be worse than saying nothing. No cover or moulded part appears anywhere in the detail.
A sheet pile cap is a third thing again: the capping beam run along the top of a sheet pile wall to tie the pans and distribute load off individual sheets. Structural, and equally outside what this site describes.
The words, and which meaning each one carries
- Pile cap
- On a foundation drawing, the buried concrete over a group of heads. In a marina yard, the moulded part on one exposed top. The drawing wins.
- Pile capping
- Almost always the protective job, and usually a verb. Foundation designers rarely say it; the people who fit covers say nothing else.
- Pile head
- The structural name for the top where it meets the cap. It belongs on drawings, never on an order for a cover.
- Pile top
- The maintenance name for that same face once it is exposed and in the weather. Search with this one if you want a part number.
- Piling cap, piling cover
- American dock vocabulary for the moulded part. Cover is the more honest of the two: plenty of them are a shell, with nothing bonding the bottom edge to the member.
- Dock post
- A lighter member carrying fenders, cleats or a walkway rather than deck load. Same water, smaller diameter, and not a pile whatever the invoice calls it.
- Marine pylon
- The same driven member described from the water instead of from the deck. Nothing about the capping changes.

If your scope of works says capping the piles, settle which one before it goes out
A civils contractor reads that line as concrete and prices breaking down heads, reinforcement, formwork and a pour. A marine contractor reads the identical line as covers and prices a count of tops and a day with a torch. The two returns are not comparable and neither bidder has misread you. Write the member, the face and the intent instead - cover the exposed tops of 60 timber piles, 300 mm nominal top diameter - and the ambiguity dies in the tender rather than at a site meeting. If concrete is what you need, stop here and take it to your structural engineer. Nothing on this site will help you.
