Application: marinas, jetties and floating docks
A marina asset crosses all four bands in one member
IN AIR at the sawn crown, SPLASH ZONE within a metre of it, SUBMERGED below that, BURIED where the shore-power trench leaves the jetty head. Nothing else here spans the whole scale, so a marina is quoted from a survey rather than a list.
Four bands, four clocks, one structure
This page is the schedule, not the part, and settles no dimension of its own. The one span everything is measured against is quoted below, with a link to where it is set out. If your question is really about the concrete element tying a driven pile group into a deck slab, that sense is pulled apart on pile cap or pile capping.
Stand at a finger pontoon on a spring low and one timber pile shows you the whole scale. Its top is in air, taking sun, rain, roosting birds and, north of the frost line, water that gets into a check and freezes overnight. A short way down begins the splash zone, wetted and dried on every tide, which removes material fastest because the surface never settles into being either wet or dry. Below that the member is submerged, losing section to organisms rather than to weather.
The buried band sits on the same asset but not the same member: it turns up at the shore end, in the trench carrying the pontoon feeder and in whatever ground bed the cathodic protection occupies. So four failure clocks run on one structure and a cap reaches only the two at the top. The survey is three columns walked at low water: substrate, diameter across the top, band.
The schedule, element by element
In descending band order, which is roughly the order to work in.
Timber pile crowns
Measure across the sawn face, over any capping plate or ring bolt already fitted, since that is what the cap recovers over. Five published sizes span 140 to 460 mm (5.5 to 18 in), quoted at more than 30 years from one application. Dock pile caps.
Dock post and fender post tops
A post is not a pile and the survey should not merge the columns. Posts carry no deck load, are often under 140 mm across, and get replaced on a rolling basis anyway, which changes the payback sum. Pole caps.
Shore-power and lighting cable ends
Spare cores left long in a pedestal, drum ends in the yard, the feeder end lying in a duct that floods on every tide. Hot-melt lined caps close XLPE, PVC, PILC and rubber sheaths across GEC 001S to GEC 1101, continuous limit -40 to +110 °C. Insulcap end caps.
Anode lead-wire joints
Where steel piles or a pontoon frame carry cathodic protection, the lead-wire joint opens before the anode is spent. The mastic-lined GAC cap runs 0420 to 0550, -55 to +100 °C. Read the limit on anode caps first: the published text covers buried anode beds, not immersed marine ones.
The permit decides this, not the datasheet
Rarely made on performance. It is made by whoever signs the hot-work permit, and on a fuel berth that person often signs nothing.
- The sealed cap needs an open flame. Recovery is above 125 °C from a propane or butane torch, on a structure whose deck, fenders and piles are all combustible and whose neighbours are boats. That is a permit and a fire watch.
- The push-on cap needs nothing. No torch, tools or skill, which is why it survives where a permit is refused outright. Ordering variants of the moulded PVC form are on the manufacturer's vinyl pole cap page.
- Nobody should call the push-on version waterproof. No adhesive, no mastic, no published ingress rating: a cover over the crown, not a seal into it. It still earns a line, keeping birds off and taking freeze-thaw, UV and ozone.
- Sequence by tide, and let each cap cool. Take the crowns that come dry at low water first, and keep the fuel berth as its own visit under its own permit. A crew re-coiling rope onto a warm pile undoes the bond it just paid for. Technique on installing a heat-shrink cap; flame-free routes on end caps where no flame is allowed.
Two things capping will not buy you
A crown that already fails a probe is a repair or a replacement, and sealing it traps the water that is in there. Capping belongs to the sound members, which is why the survey comes before the order. And nothing fitted at the top reaches borer damage below the waterline: that is a different survey, with a diver in it.

Send the survey, not the berth count
Three columns per element answers with sizes: substrate, diameter across the top, band. Say in the same message whether a hot-work permit can be raised on that pontoon, because that changes the specification more than any dimension.
